L&D coordinators

The workshop focuses on essential aspects of written official communication. It focuses on selected linguistic correctness issues (spelling, grammar, and stylistics) and the main principles of editing written documents. In all areas, it recalls the primary laws of creating cultured documents and draws attention to phenomena in which mistakes are often made or whose codification has changed. Participants may ask any additional questions.

Stylistics: courtesy in official correspondence (address and greetings), administrative and personal communication style, selected issues of Czech vocabulary, clear sentence and sentence structure.
Spelling and grammar: use of abbreviations and marks, use of commas in sentences and clauses, use of initial capital letters.
Editing of documents: layout of text on the page, layout of paragraphs, marking out parts of the text, principles for drafting an official letter (all in accordance with CSN 01 6910).

Goals

You will get acquainted with reliable sources of information on Czech and editing (print and online) and learn how to use them effectively.
You will review basic spelling rules, stylistic principles, and recommendations for editing.
You will gain confidence in argumentation, which is sometimes essential when defending your position in the workplace.
You will test your ability to identify and correct weaknesses in a text.

Jan Táborský is an experienced proofreader, editor, and consultant in the field of the Czech language. He studied Czech language and literature at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University and later worked as an assistant. He also deepened his knowledge of Czech at the Institute for the Czech Language of the CAS. He has experience in government, non-profit, and commercial editorial positions. He runs a language agency specializing in proofreading, editorial work, and lectures in Czech language courses for Czechs. He is the author of the book Jazykové jednohubky (Zoner Press, 2014).
